Dieting

Quite Simply. We diet to lose weight. Usually the motivating factor involves fitting into that perfect outfit... or shocking friends/foes that you haven't seen in a while. There are way too many benefits to taking the time and thinking about what we are putting into our body to not give it a whirl.
  • you may not experience the toll that many serious illnesses can take on an unhealthy body
  • your energy level will increase
  • your immune system will become stronger which will mean fewer illnesses
A few things that I have come to realize:

  • Just because you eat a lot doesn't mean you aren't undernourished. If you aren't getting a varied, balance diet then you are basically still running on empty.
  • A diet will prevent and treat certain chronic conditions. Healthy eating can prevent the risk of developing cancer and heart disease. It helps control diabetes and high blood pressure, and can even reduce symptoms and manage an illness or symptom.
  • Most "off the grid" medica will recommend dietary changes to manage everything from epilepsy to infertility.
My goal this weekend is to come out with a complete 2 week meal plan and grocery list.

Nutrition is something that I currently struggle with... but if I can do Plyometrics... I can do this. I've been reading The Abs Diet books and watching a few videos... I'm ready to take this to the next level...

Nutrition

I just purchased the Abs Diet book this evening. I'm going to read it. Make my grocery list and see how it goes. I feel like I have a good grip on the exercise portion of this... I can't believe that I am even in a position to say that! It's following through and getting the logistics down for cooking and eating regularly that's gonna be a doozie for me.

Muscle confusion (the principle of changing your routines to keep your body guessing) is the TRUTH!!!!

I enjoy doing the upper body workouts. I'm pretty secure in my ability to make it to the end of the workout. I already know that I'm going to be tired, winded, and sore... but this week...

Whew!!!

With INTENSITY comes fatigue... and my butt was whooped this morning on what still s one of my favorite workouts... lol

P90X - Plyometrics - Day 2

Man-O-Manechevitz!!! ( I know that it's spelled Manischewitz) lol


The key word for today.... INTENSITY!!!!

I brought the guns with me today... I made sure I lifted higher... pushed myself a little bit more.

And felt the difference.... At the 24 minute mark... I thought that I was gonna hurl... FOR REAL!

Then I remember when Tony, at the beginning of the video, said... GET YA BUCKET!

I truly know what he meant by that now.

But do I ever feel wonderful!!!!

P90X - Chest & Back - Ab Ripper X (Day 1)

Getting back on the horse full force is something else man...

All I kept thinking was... After this I get a reward...

What do I reward myself with you ask?

P90X Recovery Drink of course!!!!! Tastes like a orange creamcicle... I put my bottle of water AND my sports bottle in the freezer at the beginning of my workout and when I'm done I make a b-line for the freezer. Pour that bottle of water that usually has a few ice chips in it directly into my ice cold sports bottle and then rip open a packet of thw P90X Recovery Drink, Shake it up real good till it has a good froth on top then I sit in my easy chair and drink that thing down... Oh it feels so good too. Click the link to find it in the Beachbody Store... It is awesome!

Chest and Back is something man. It's probably my favorite of the workouts. I have never had a great deal of upper body strength and this work continues to defy what I think that I am capable of. I still can't do the Decline Push-Up or the Dive Bombers but...

but....


but...

I actually did Ab Ripper X... immediately following the 60 minute Chest & Back Routine!!!!!!

I was frowning... panting... and cussing... I took more breaks than all of them on the screen combined... but you know what???

Never have I felt so accomplished! Every single day I get up and press play... and I feel like I can conquer the world! It's amazing what working out does to my psyche... my confidence... and my ability to focus on the various tasks that I have set on my calendar. Getting up a 5:00 am ( I had to push the time back so that I can have the time to do Ab Ripper X... I was using the time factor as one of my excuses as to why I couldn't do it) and checking P90X off my list is an amazing thing.

I can do this... And So Can You!

Lesson's Learned

After a much needed conversation with my Coach Derek and my friend Ty, I have a renewed sense of committment to my health journey. My mind was racing with thoughts as I hung up the phone. This one prevailed... and carried over to this morning.

We are so quick to redirect a child's behavior when they step over the line.

We don't give them candy before bedtime

We are always suggesting (or orchestrating) playdates to keep them active

We are always telling them... EAT YOUR VEGGIES!!!!

Why is it that we hold them to a standard that we do not honor in ourselves?

Children learn by IMITATION and REPETITION.

Who are they imitating if not us? Think about it.

I haven't posted since my birthday but I'm still pressing play ladies.

I felt a bit sick this morning and my mood isn't as chipper as it has been as of late... but I'm gonna keep it moving. I'm going to start my program all over... My birthday week sort of knocked me off my square as far as diet was concerned I'm still working out but not at the intensity that I know lies within me.

So come Monday... I'm gonna set fire to all this lusciousness... The P90X way!

P90X - Classic - Char's Day 19

Yeah I'm a little late with my post this morning...

It's been a busy day already... lol

Legs and Back wasn't so bad today. Still getting the slight nausea but no where as bad as it was when I first began this program.

I brought it a little harder this week so I am very proud of that...

and in the famous words of Tony Horton... That recovery drink is MONEY!!!!!

I usually put a bottle of water in the freezer right before I begin my workout and then pour that icy goodness in my water bottle, add the recovery drink mix, and then shake it till I get a good froth on the top... Yummy!

I thinking of these last three weeks as an opportunity for me to see what my body can do... getting a feel for P90X and my abilities within it.

Things I know...
  1. I feel stronger,
  2. My lung capacity had increased,
  3. I feel better about myself.

What better reason than that do I need to keep pressing play?

Well I have a couple of clients that are looking to me for advice, guidance, and clarification. That will help me to bring it hard every time I press play!

Have an awesome Thursday. Today is the last day that I will walk this earth as a 33 year old woman. Tomorrow is my birthday!!!!!!

P90X - Classic - Char's Day 18

Curses, Curses, Curses....

***CHARPOWERFITNESS MINI CONFESSIONAL***

My eyes opened at 5:20AM.... Alarm blaring in the next room...

I looked over to my right to see if that mule that was there a couple of weeks ago had passed out from the exhaustion that he must be experiencing from kicking me in the head. He couldn't be found.

I got out of the bed... trudged to the bathroom to find the alarm clock

and... And... AND...

I PRESSED THE SNOOZE BUTTON!!!!!!!!!!!

*GASP*

Got right back in my bed (then I got right out of it three minutes later out of guilt)

Popped Yoga X in and... PRESSED PLAY.

Where is a Topamax when ya need one!

I only made it to the 30 minute mark before my head felt like it was going to explode and I was gonna hurl.

Since I knew that it would look like a massacre in my apartment that I did not want to experience the joy of cleaning my carpet as a result of going forward.. I stretched my way right outta there.

Eventhough I didn't get as far as I did last week. i feel good about pressing through and getting in my 30 minutes.

You ever watch that one man comedy show with... George Lopez?

It's the one where he says... "I got a pain in my chess and I cannot breaf"

Yeah... Say it just like that!

Or... Sanford & Son when Redd Foxx would grip his chest and look skyward saying "Ya, hear me Elizabeth... I'm coming to join ya honey... With... (whatever was causing him anxiety at the moment)

(If not... you need to step ya Comedy Central & Nick At Night game up... lol)

Well I got a pain in my side... and I can "breaf" just fine... NOW... hehehe And Elizabeth is going be waiting a while because I got Tony and the Kids in my sight!

Lawd-a-Mercy!

Every day... Is brand new in P90X.

Muscle Confusion is a beautiful thing...

Every Day... another muscle group is sore.

And the crazy thing is this...

I now look for that... soreness like it's a friend.

I am so enjoying my workouts...

They make me cuss...

They make me grunt...

They make me wobble...

But...

I am getting stronger...

My form is getting better...

And I continue to Press Play.

It's Tuesday yall!

I started bringing it at 5:30 this morning and I'm going to keep that momentum going throughout my workday!

P90X - Classic - Char's Day 16

Yet another morning that my alarm goes off and I have had less than six hours of sleep.

I was so disoriented. I purposely keep my alarm clock in the bathroom (which is right next to my bedroom) so that I have to get up and move around in order to turn that thing off. At 5:30 in the morning... If that was in my bedroom I would turn it off and roll right back to la la land... lol

So I get up and walk with my eyes closed... to turn it off.

AND THEN I PRESS PLAY!!!!!

Evil... Evil... Evil...

Plyo & Nausea are synonymous for me... BUT not nearly as bad as week 1!!!!!

I'm getting stronger... my form is getting better... And I am hella excited about that.

There are a few moves where I can't leave the ground just yet but I just modify those and get on my tippy toes and reach as high as I can.

I'll be airborne soon with those....

I'll get you Tony Horton... next time

Oh yeah... There will be a next time...
This ain't over until the fat lady sings... Lucky for me buy the time I start singin'... I won't be a fat lady any more... lol

P90X - Classic - Char's Day 15

Today is the day.... I realize... I have no core strength... lol

Sad yes... I know. I'm determined to change that.

Today Was Chest & Back. I got in really late last night from a concert and really didn't think that I would be up to meet my buddies in WOWY.

I feel great about my performance... although I still haven't been able to get up from that dive bomber. But that's better than not trying it at all... lol

But... Alas... at 8:15 this morning... my eyes were opened and I crawled out of bed.

I brought it today... and guess what?

I did Ab Ripper X!

Almost as soon as I got through the In & Outs I felt like I had to vomit. Yeah... it was rough. I kept pressing through the pain and discomfort and was able to do a good portion of it. My belly fat makes some of the moves awkward but I am doing my best. Even though I know that I'm not doing some of the moves exactly as Tony & the Kids are... I know I am doing my best. Each time I do an exercise my body is going to get stronger and stronger.

P90X - Classic - Char's Day 14

Ok...

Ok!

OK!!!!

I truly approached this X Stretch as *just* a stretch.... BAD MOVE Char... lol

You would think that I should know better by now. Tony don't play that!!!!

There was one move that I couldn't even imagine doing... I can't think of the name of it but you start out on your back and slowly bring your legs in the air... straight up until your back is off the floor and you are basically resting on your shoulders!!!

WHAT?

I modified that move real quick. The day that I'm able to do that move without modification I'm gonna celebrate like you wouldn't believe!!!

I have always thought that I am pretty flexible... but there are some parts of my body that I can't wait to disappear. My belly for one thing... And my boobs... Those things get in the way like nobody's business!

Poof I say... BE GONE!!! Hahahahaha!

I know that all of these things will come in time. I am pressing through the discomfort and getting closer and closer to my mark... It's in my sights and I'm not losing focus!

P90X - Classic - Char's Day 12

I'm Alive...

This was a rough day. Not exercisewise... but life event wise... lol

I almost didn't get my workout in but eventhough my body was unwilling... I made it through!

I press on to take hold of that for which I have set in my sights... I am determined to get better and better... and exceed even my own expectations.

Legs and Back WHOOPED my butt!!!

And I loved it...

I feel good about what I'm doing here... I am confident that each step I take is moving me one step closer to where I need and want to be.

Life is good... and is only going to get better. I decided to become a part of the Team Beachbody Family and become a coach... I am excited at the prospects of helping others and the potential to affect change in peoples lives for the better.

What better way to do that than by teaching people about healthier lifestyles!

P90X - Classic - Char's Day 11

You know... it's a good thing that I feel a sense of accomplishment with the other videos because I think Yoga is gonna be the death of me... lol Why in the heck do my elbows and knees ache?

No seriously... Don't get me wrong I still despise Plyo like it stole my darn Milk Money back in grammar school. But Yoga... is difficult... for me. There are two very apparent problems.... Well besides my tendons massaging my Central Nervous System...

  1. I have VERY poor balance which I'm sure has a lot to do with my body make up
  2. This one I hate to admit. My belly gets in the way and after all that compression from the vinyasa and chattarunga I feel severely nauseous after 40 minutes.
The first issue will take care of itself with these workouts... The more I do it the better I will get. The second one will take care of itself by a couple of means... After talking with my coach Derek yesterday I now hear him in my head saying... "Don't be afraid of Ab Ripper X... Attack it!" The nutrition plan that I am going to implement on Sunday, May 4, 2008 and the addition of Ab Ripper X will begin to tackle my belly bulge.

I am determined to conquer P90X. It's gonna happen... I feel the difference every day! As all of these things come together and I press through. I will see improvements with this and all of my workouts.

Cleanin' Out The Fridge


This weekend I started the process of purging my kitchen of the foods that I know are not a part of Michi's Ladder. It'll be interesting to see how I incorporate eating healthily into my crazy lifestyle. After talking with my wonderful coach Derek I am a little more at ease about my ability to grocery shop for meals that I would actually eat and prepare regularly. He sent me an easy to use list of allowable foods for the first phase of the P90X Nutrition Plan.

So I'm making my grocery list and meal planning this week and do my shopping this weekend.

Next Week... It's on! Oh yeah... ya girl is mad hyped!

Jumbled Mornings...

Oh how I love to wake up in the morning at 5:20 and workout with Tony & the Kids...

Oh how I love to shower, dress, and pack my bag for work...

Oh how I love to discover that while it is 7:05am when I put my mascara on and I'm a mere minute and a half from leaving my apartment... I am not actually supposed to be doing that because I don't have to leave my apartment until 9:00am!!!!!

It's Tuesday you forgetful ninny!!! You don't have to be to work until 10am!!!! I could have slept in another hour!

I was so eager to get up and get my workout done that I totallly forgot that today was my late day at work... hehehe

I guess there are worse things in life... lol

P90X - Classic - Char's Day 10

Whew!!!! Whew!!! Whew!!!

I woke up this morning with a killer headache around midnight... You ever get one of those? I can honestly say that I haven't had a significant headache since I began P90X so it was a surprise when I woke up feeling like a mule had just kicked the hell outta my right temple.

I managed to get back to sleep and woke up at 5:20 to prepare for Shoulder's & Arms...

This workout isn't awful by any means. There are two parts that I really struggled with last week and struggled with this week as well but I was able to complete more reps and add the 15lb resistance bands to... So I know I'm getting stronger....

I still haven't touched Ab Ripper X... I know that will kill me for sure when I add it next week.

P90X - Classic - Char's Day 9

Plyo is still the devil...

But this morning I went down there with my grillin' fork to fight 'em off!!!!

I still giggled when Tony cussed... That was the highlight of my workout..

Oh that.... and the fact that your girl made it *almost* to the end of her workout without feeling like the Plyo minions had stolen all of the oxygen out of my living room!

So while I still had 14 minutes to go... there were two things that I took note of...

  1. I did twenty minutes more than I did last week
  2. I only felt like nauseous at the 40 minute mark!
Soooooooooooooooooooooooo You know what that means... There is hope for this Fluffy Chic... Who won't be so fluffy for that much longer!

Well each of those P90X videos represents a step for me!!!!! You think its a coincidence that there are 12 videos? I think not.... P90X is therpeutic for me!

P90X - Classic - Char's Day 8

Still Sore from Kenpo.... I must be doing something right.

So I got up this morning and Pressed Play...

This workout was much more intense since I added the BeachBody Push Up Stands and the B-Lines Resistance Bands.

Whew! I certainly feel the difference from doing Chest & Back with the bands & stands as opposed to using nothing last week. I can feel myself being able to "Bring It" a littlle bit more intensely than I did last week. I am focusing more on my form than on the number of reps... I figure once the form is right... the reps will come.

My goal is to become stronger, faster, and leaner... I know it will come. I am a work in progress... and as long as I take at least one step every day I have done something huge for myself.

This week my Resistance Bands Upgrade Kit should arrive. Then I can simulate the chin-ups/pull-ups more accurately. I won't be ordering the recovery drink until Thursday so I won't get that until next week.

P90X - Classic - Char's Day 7

Ummmmm.

Why didn't anyone tell me that that the day after Kenpo that I would feel like a Mack truck had run me over and stamped "Day 6" on my @$$!!!!!!

While I WANTED to put that X Stretch in this morning.... I chose the rest option instead... I definitely need that recovery drink... Can't wait until it comes.

I'm ready for Chest & Back tomorrow!

Mini-Goals

Current Weight: 235
Mini-Goal Weight: 200
Goal Weight: 170 (or whatever feels good to me between here and there)

Every week I'm going to do an assessment of my weight, my goals, and my progress (or lack therof). I may or may not actually post the results... lol

The mini-goal was inspired by a movie called Touching the Void, a film about a mountain climber that injured himself while climbing down a mountain. He stated that he had to set little goals in order to get down the mountain with his broken leg.

My situation isn't as drastic as his... 10lb incriments is a good place for me to begin.

P90X - Classic - Char's Day 6

*NOTE TO SELF... PURCHASE RECOVERY DRINK A.S.A.P.*

Kenpo kicked my A$ this morning... I was in the midst of it and still didn't see that ish coming.

There were a couple of the "twisty" type moves that I couldn't do precisely the way that Tony and his crew were doing... but I did those without twisting my ankles.

Oh yeah... and those "X" jacks?????

Maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan!!!!!! I did ONE the entire workout... the other times I marched and did knee lifts or walked around...

To say I survived Kenpo is a gross overstatement... I sat down after I was done and couldn't believe how my body felt afterwards... At one point I started giggling... not because anything humorous had happened... I was cracking up in disbelief that I... The Fluffy Girl from Philly... Had completed SIX CONSECUTIVE days of X-treme physical activity... WOWOWOWOWOW!

This one wiped me out and it has never felt so good... I will be purchasing the recovery drink this week... If I had to goto work right after this workout I would have been miserable... Luckily I have a three day weekend!!!!! As soon as I got my wits about me... I planted my butt right in the bed for three hours... lol

I'm up and ready for my X Stretch tomorrow. Saw a couple of you in WOWY this morning... I didn't workout until 7:45 this morning... but that was because I didn't have to get ready for work!

P90X - Classic - Char's Day 5

Woke up this morning sans the alarm clock and was very... alarmed.

My television was on... and I could hear the news... and somehow... my a$ was still in the bed...

Looked over at my clock and it said... 5:45... What the heck happened to my 5:30 buzzing sound? What happend was... Char didn't set the alarm last night.

So I cussed a bit... stumbled into the living room... Logged into WOWY and Pressed Play...

Legs & Back wasn't so bad (hell compared to Plyo from Monday this was a cake walk) One of the main points that I really began to "tremble" was during the wall squats... man.... I thought my thighs were having seizures at one point... and the single leg squats? Fa-git-about-it! I just did the regular wall squats and called it a day...

While I didn't get as many reps as I would have liked I am going to continue to focus on my form and let the rest work itself out.

Tomorrow... Kenpo...

Scared? Yup!

Excited? Hell Yes!

P90X - Classic - Char's Day 4

If Plyo is the devil... Yoga X is certainly one of it's minions.

Up until I "met" Tony via P90X... I considered myself pretty flexible. I even own a couple of Yoga/Pilates videos. I knew that I have some balance issues and anticipated being a bit "wobbly". I guess when I think about it... It has been a while since I've done any significant Yoga or Pilates.

I made it through half of the Yoga X. It's a 90 minute set... I made it to 45 minutes. Not because I was tired but mainly due to the fact that my balance/posture won't allow me to do some of the moves that are being done... Today... Trust me when I tell you that I WILL get though this video eventually. As my strength and coordination builds.... and my belly and/or boobs (get in the way of most of the poses) begin to tone.... I will be waiting for Tony at the finishline.... Telling him to "Get It Up!" and take a water break if he needs it... hahahahahaha

Y'all hear me talking smack???

My journey is going to take me a lot longer than 90 days. It took me way more than 90 days to abuse my body until it got to this point... It would be insane for me to think that it would be a cake-walk to reverse the affects of poor diet and sporadic exercise.

Like I said before... this is a lifestyle change... and I'm on my way...

P90X - Classic - Char's Day 3

Ok...

So I woke up this morning thinking I was doing Yoga X only to discover (after viewing my trusty calander/spreadsheet) that I was actually supposed to do Shoulders & Arms.

So... At 5:30 this morning I was trying to wrap my brain around that little fact and making sure I cue'd up the appropriate video.

Got that sorted out. Had the correct worksheet up on my screen and was finally able to log into the Work Out With You (WOWY) feature on the Team Beachbody website. Check the links in the Cookie Jar on the right.

I OFFICIALLY LOVE THIS VIDEO!!! Now I may feel differently when I add the resistance bands to it next week but as it stands right now. I can do Shoulders and Arms ALL DAY!!!

I was even able to do the bonus round. What I wasn't able to do was the Ab Ripper. I'm going to have to give that a whirl next week I suppose. After that hour of Shoulders & Arms my body was wasted. That additional 25 minutes of Abs just seamed like a bear.


I WILL BEAT IT!

I totally enjoyed todays workout and surprised myself with my ability to complete two of the exercises today!

I'm typing this with my phone so if the formatting looks Crazy I'll clean it up when I get into the office.

I'm at the dentist right now about to get the left half of my mouth scaled. I had the right done last week and it was no fun.

P90X - Classic - Char's Day 2

Plyometrics is the devil incarnate!!!!!!

Evil I tell ya!

Even Tony cussed in it... (Sh... I mean Jeepers... lol)

For the uninitiated... It is basically Jump Training... gravity is not your friend!

My chest burned... and I felt like I was going to vomit at the 15 minute mark.

I see why Tony says that this workout is the "X" in P90X!

My friggin arms feel like jello. And this is primarily a leg workout!

Man am I out of shape.

He suggested that if you can't do the Plyometrics that you could substitute it for the Cardio X disc... I may do just that next week. I figure either way I'm gonna feel like I gotta vomit... so I'm going to stick with the Plyometrics and hope that I can make it to the end of it eventually ( I was burnt out by the time we completed the warm up. ) BUT I pressed through another 15 minutes before I had to call it quits...

Next time... I'll do much more... I know it!

Oh... did I mention that there is a dude in the video with a prosthetic leg?????

He was getting busy man!

P90X - Classic - Char's Day 1



You ever had your ego shattered and you were the only one in the room?

Well that has been my experience this morning....

WOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOW (a'la Flava Flav)

I made it through both rounds of the the Chest & Back video.

Since my Resistance Bands haven't arrived yet I modified it a bit.

I did it with no weights and I don't have a chin up bar. (My resistance bands will do the job of both of these when they arrive sometime this week.

I surprised myself at how many push ups I was able to do over the course of the entire workout (73) I have very little upper body strength and ZERO core strength.

After an hour of the Chest & Back... I didn't have the strength to complete the 20 minute Ab Ripper X.

My goal the next time I do the Chest & Back is to add on more rep to each of the excercises. There were for exercises that I couldn't do at all (wide front pull-ups, Reverse Grip Chin-Ups, Closed Grip Overhand Pull-ups, Decline Push-ups, Dive-Bomber Push-ups, Ab Ripper X)... but I am not going to be too down about it. I did more in this one workout than I have in most of the exercising that I have ever done.

I know that all of the chin-ups will be done the next time because I will have my Resistance Bands by the next time... as my strength builds... I'll be able to do those other three.

I am going to buy that recovery drink and the performance bars from the beach body site... or maybe I'll see what GNC has available... apparently the one on the BeachBody site is pretty good... and specially formulated for the P90X workout... I was feeling nausea during the workout... so I know I need something more than water to get me through.

Can't wait to see what my girls post regarding there experience with the Core Synergenics workout.

All in all... I am excited... and tired as hell! See ya tomorrow folx!

I used to be happy about that. Most days I still am...

But...

Some days...

I loathe what I see...

HATE the way I feel.

Thus... my quest for... something... to change that.
